Poveglia Island, Italy
Located in the Venetian lagoon, this island is often known as the “most haunted island in the world” and for good reason too.
This was the place where the sick and dying were shipped off to from the mainland and it was mainly used during the isolation of the plague victims.
In the 1920s, a mental hospital was also built on the island. The soil today is a mixture of dirt and human ashes.
