In Up, Carl Is Dead
Even without this dark fan theory, Up is a pretty emotional movie. Famously, the movie begins with a heart-wrenching montage of main character Carl and the love of his life, Ellie. From there, Carl takes off with enthusiastic child Russel to fulfill a promise he made to his late wife. This theory argues that Carl died at the beginning of the movie, and that “Paradise Falls” is really heaven. That makes Charles Muntz a fallen angel, and Russell an angel trying to earn his wings (or badge).
