Most of us were scared of monsters under the bed growing up, which is exactly why the premise of Monsters Inc. is so clever.

It builds on this universally shared experience, but in the movie the monsters need the screams of children as their power source – which is why they scare children, not because they are evil.

But thanks to Boo, Sulley and Mike Wazowski realize children’s laughter is even better. But the problem is, even though Boo laughs and giggles all the time, it only transforms into a power source some of the time. How come?
