That Freud Reference

At one point in the movie, Rose is speaking to the Titanic’s managing director, Bruce Ismay, when she masterfully delivers an insult to his manhood. She tells him he might take interest in Freud’s work on the male preoccupation with size, suggesting that building such a large ship is clearly meant to make up for one’s unimpressive size.

This is pretty rude (and funny nonetheless), but the timing is a bit off. Sigmund Freud had these ideas formulated by that time, but they were only published in 1919. Was she close friends with Freud or something?
