Their family home had been severely damaged in 2011, by the Christchurch earthquake. The family had spent several thousand dollars to repair their only home.
This meant that almost all of their money was tight up in their household, due to them continuously having to pay towards repairing their home. If they were going to pay for Evan’s treatment, they would need to mortgage the house.
